We are happy report that the AllPeopleBeHappy foundation Houston headquarters survived Hurricane Ike. In fact the days without running water and electricity gave us a renewed appreciation for the plight of those who live in a world without the luxuries we take for granted. It also gave us a renewed appreciation of the simple things in life, like books. It seems fitting that for our first annual campaign we are partnering with Room to Read to build 6 libraries for schools in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Laos. Check out how to support this effort at www.AllPeopleBeHappy.org.
Our On-Going Work
This past quarter, we made two additional grants of $10,000, one to Amizade, and one to Support for International Change:
Clean Water is the foundation of healthy diet, hygiene, and sanitation. In Karagwe, Tanzania, water is scarce, and the cheapest, simplest, and most effective solution to Karagwe’s water
shortage is the construction of rooftop water harvesting systems. Amizade has proposed a 3-year program to install a minimum of 36 water harvesting systems, with labor and materials provided by local and global volunteers. The grant from the AllPeopleBeHappy foundation will be used for the salary of a full-time staff member in Africa and a part-time staff member in the US to coordinate the logistics of construction and to organize the volunteers.
Support for International Change (SIC) has been working in northern Tanzania since 2002 to
limit the impact of HIV/AIDS in rural communities. The $10,000 grant from the AllPeopleBeHappy foundation will be used to expand SIC’s community based services. The project consists of 4 community-based services: 1) reproductive health education and HIV prevention workshops, 2) mobile provision of Voluntary Counseling and Testing, 3) establishment of HIV support groups, and 4) mobile provision of antiretroviral drugs in conjunction with government hospitals.
Meet Our Directors - Frances and Steve Swanson
Frances is a native Houstonian. Her interests and education led her to become a Registered Nurse specializing in Cardiac Care. She currently works in the Texas Medical Center in the Michael DeBakey Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Her main interests outside her work are gardening and interior decorating. She is a certified Master Gardener.
Steve is a graduate of Purdue University with a PhD in Chemical Engineering. He has worked his entire professional life for Shell Oil Company, with assignments in Houston and Baton Rouge, and with global responsibilities which have enabled him to not only see the world, but to gain a much broader prospective on how to work with people from different cultures.
Frances and Steve have been happily married for over 28 years. They have enjoyed many
adventures together traveling, skiing, scuba diving, sailing… They were like a second set of parents to Eric and have many fond memories of him growing up. His hope and vision about how people who are capable can help those who need a helping hand, have moved them to become Directors of the AllPeopleBeHappy foundation.
